Pierce Announces “CARE” Initiative, Clean Cab Pumper Design

Siddons-Martin Emergency Group is committed to helping change the culture and mindset of firefighters by limiting exposure to carcinogens and reducing cross-contamination from bunker gear to individuals, equipment, the fire station, personal vehicles, and even family members. In February of this year, we partnered with Pierce Manufacturing and other departments to join the Clean Gear: The New Badge of Honor initiative. Earlier this month, Pierce Manufacturing announced the “CARE” initiative, Carcinogen Awareness and Reduction to Exposure, and a partnership with the Firefighter Cancer Support Network. The health and safety of America’s bravest is the most important aspect of these initiatives. But we’re not just talking about it; we are doing something about it. This year at FDIC we had a clean cab pumper on display that featured a variety of innovative ways to reduce exposure to carcinogens and keep firefighters safe.

The interior of this clean cab pumper features all smooth, vinyl surfaces and driver/officer seats along with a diamond plate floor for easiness to cleanse. In the back of the cab, we have built in a new line of seats that offer a removable cover. And for departments who run the air conditioning a good bit (most of our customers!), a high-impact HVAC filtration system has been installed for reduced particle circulation, making sure that any debris and contaminants do not get into the HVAC system.

The exterior of the cab is where the SCBA packs are stored. As you can see on this clean cab pumper layout, the SCBA packs are stored in the P2 compartment above the rear wheel well. This particular configuration allows for a slide-out, drop-down tray so it is easier to gear up. This unit also features a warm water rinse with an 18 gallon warm water rinse station designed specifically to keep your hands, face, and other parts of the body clean. When you get ready to leave the fire scene and head back to the station, you can store dirty gear in the upper coffin compartments, or anywhere you see fit outside of the cab. This truck features a vertical exhaust vent which reroutes the truck’s exhaust upward and away from the apparatus operator.

We would encourage you to watch this walk-around video produced by Pierce Manufacturing at FDIC and learn more about this pumper. Through constant product development, training, education, and fundraising, we are committed to raising awareness and the resources necessary to protect firefighters and their families from carcinogen exposure.
